On the road. Discovering who This New Man is.
Born This Way
The men of the past had a consistent idea of what it meant to be a good man. They might have been pretty narrow in their masculine conceptions, but there was little doubt that those real men shared a common mold.
Digital sculpturing lets us take a lot more of what is around us and shape it into something with its own kind of broad appeal. The next generation of men won’t be like all the other good men around them. They’ll be their own kind of manly winners. After all, I hear their mommas have apparently told them that they are each born being their own kind of superstar but a superstar all the same.
Kansas City rocked my vision of this way of being. The bad kids I met, even in the off-season downtown markets, were proud of who they were and not at all ashamed that they were all young men with good servings of confidence.
And Connor Stanton (left), Tyler Mulholland (right). isn’t afraid to grab his own portion of what it means to be born this way!
At first I thought this was something quirky cool about Connor. But then I got a look at the art on the street walls across they city. The graffiti takes its own path but still says with confidence that it too was born the middle-American way.
Power & Light. In the KC they named a whole district after these manly qualities.
Maybe it means something that one of the jumping sports and drinking zones in their downtown is in the shadow of wall art of African American jazz greats and across the street from the Sprint Center. We were there right before the rodeo was about to spill over from the tech arena to the streets for a Mardi Gras celebration.
Born this way gives one a lot of options. And with more options good kids can do dope things with the deep badness of culture and class.
We don’t all have to be the same to all come from superstar molds.
Take a lesson from Connor and the Gaga gang. Creative. Artsy. Hip. A good new man.
