On the road. Discovering who This New Man is.
Fog wraps around our home. It’s cold again but the discomfort comes from the moisture and not really being able to see the way to warmer weather. I can hear the foghorns of the ships traveling through one of the waterways that feed the San Francisco Bay. The captain is planning for ways to stay out of trouble.
Which kind of got me thinking as I was doing some packing for my trip to Travel 4 Men: Is The New Manemerging because he wants to or because those who make money from men want them to change? Do real mean want to shop, dress, make friendships, care about their perceptions, parent, etc., differently because he trusts that change is good, or are those of us in the business of men trying to convince everyone that there is a new market they can make money from?
I’m closing my retail business after seven years because my effort to add a niche for men and those who care for men didn’t carry through in our small town. We adapted and changed with the tough times, and we built a good customer base. Most loved what we added – but they didn’t buy enough to go with their attitudes.
Traveling 4 Men is what we are doing to find the places where men hang out, where the community stops and people share what is real. La Parada is about that for men and seeing if men are really getting ready for what is ahead, for what The New Man might be like.
As a Latin Man, I see things differently than other white guys do. And I see what is happening as the Latin culture meets the main American culture across the Southwest.
So as I sit here listening to the passing ships, I’m curious: Are men really getting lost in the fog or are they charting a new path?
I trust they are ahead of the game. I expect to hear them to see if I can detect where they might be heading in the fog of change!
